In January, the Puravarna Phang Nga Bay Regatta offers competitive sailors the opportunity to race through some of Thailand’s most striking seascapes around Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi. It has grown in size and popularity since its conception in 2000 and now attracts boats from around Asia and beyond.
During Krabi's version of The Thai New Year Songkran festival in April, great processions are held in the streets and the water fights are as vigorous as they are in other provinces. Local people are supposed to bless one another with water, based upon the traditional blessing given by the monks on this day. This tradition has diversified somewhat and is now famous for young people soaking one another with ice cold buckets and water pistols. Many people make the journey home to their families to celebrate the New Year and Krabi is no exception, with the streets filled with revelers bringing in the New Year Thai Style.
The Lord Buddha’s birthday is on May 15th and traditionally known as Vesak or Visakah Puja. Vesak is the major Buddhist festival of the year as it celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha, all in one day with traditional candlelit processions held at temples throughout the province.
On the night of the full moon of the 6th and 11th Lunar months (June and November) the ceremony of 'Setting Adrift of Chao Le Boats' takes place in the Chao Le, or Sea Gypsy villages around Krabi, which includes Koh Lanta and other islands in the region. The ceremony involves the sending out into the ocean of small boats decked with candles and blessings, to bring luck to the Chao Le. Small clippings of nails and hair are also placed in the boat, as well as small dolls to keep away any evil sprits. To complete the ceremony the villagers perform the Ram Rong Ngeng, a local dance around their own boats.
Boek Fah Andaman Sea Festival celebrates the much awaited opening of Krabi’s tourist season. This festival takes place in November and features water sports, boat races, local fairs and cultural attractions such as Thai dance and Poi fire shows.
December 5th is the Thai King’s birthday and this day is celebrated with street parties and processions, as well as special events held throughout the town.
